Phoolan Devi: The Bandit Queen world premiere
full-length chamber opera
Lynn Kremer, stage director

Widely known as the bandit queen, Phoolan Devi was a controversial Indian lawmaker who rose from abused child-bride and infamous outlaw to become a Member of Parliament. She was assassinated by three masked gunmen outside her official residence in the heart of New Delhi in 2001. Revered by some as a messiah of the downtrodden and reviled by others as a ruthless killer, Phoolan Devi was one of the most controversial figures in India. Two classical Indian singers and a tabla player join the BMV ensemble for Shirish Korde’s world premiere Phoolan Devi: The Bandit Queen, with stage direction by Lynn Kremer.
