Crossings Bernard Hoffer Donald Martino Ronald Perera John Elmquist In “Crossings,” BMV cellist Jan Müller-Szeraws premieres a cello concerto by Bernard Hoffer, whose work has been heard on PBS’s The American Experience and the hit cartoon Thundercats. John Elmquist took inspiration from the recent Gulf oil spill for Junk Shot, which won the national 2011 Rapido! Composition Contest. Crossing the Meridian, Ronald Perera’s song cycle featuring tenor Frank Kelley, was commissioned by BMV in 1982 and sets to music introspective texts by William Carlos Williams, Hart Crane, and other great American poets on “those moments when time can seem frozen to us.” Donald Martino’s B.A.B.B.IT.T for solo clarinet with unusual “extensions” was composed as a 50th birthday present for Martino’s teacher and friend, Milton Babbitt.
