Boston Musica Viva marks the centennial of Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with a recent piece inspired by that masterwork and with one of Schoenberg’s lesser-performed masterpieces. Suite, Op. 29 for clarinets and piano quartet displays Schoenberg’s playful side as he embeds melodic references to his wife among dance movements. William Kraft’s Settings from Pierrot Lunaire was commissioned by the Arnold Schoenberg Institute for the 75th anniversary of Pierrot Lunaire. Kraft uniquely sets a different compilation of verses from Giraud’s celebrated poetry cycle on the artist’s quest for purity. Boston composer Curtis K. Hughes makes music of political banter in the world-premiere sextet Verbiage.
